A Winter Vacation...

One of our favorite places to vacation during the winter is Jackson Hole, Wyoming. If you like to ski or climb, then surely this must be heaven. And after a long, hard day breaking trail, a healthy, heardy meal and a home crafted beer at the Snake River Brewery can't be beat. It's where the locals hang out. Oh yeah, don't forget to set your watch to "Jackson Hole Time"..If you don't know what this means, just ask the waitress!

Also, don't miss visiting the National Elk Refuge just north of Jackson Hole. The arch in the town square is comprised of thousands of elk horns. There is one on each of the 4 corners. You can take a sleigh ride into the refuge and get inside the herd sometimes numbering in the hundreds. More info can be seen at Elk Refuge Sleigh Rides.

I suddenly think a return trip to this magical place is in order!!!

You love the ride to the Mountain...but you hate to leave and ride back!! Yesterday the weather was beautiful, in fact, when I crested the summit, to my suprize, a small wedding ceremony was taking place. Groom and best man in black & white tuxes and bride and attendants in black dresses, in heels, no less. Guess they took the tramn up!?!! But shortly thereafter, I observed them changing into sneakers...walking down, perhaps? Too bad I didn't take my camera.
Hint: above photo taken last March. I wouldn't be layered up in Sept.!! PS. The Yellow Daiseys are in full bloom and are everywhere on the Mountain.

Really Wild & Wacky!!

As promised, the Atlanta Red Bull Soapbox Race lived up to its crazy, fun crowd pleasing reputation. The weather was sunny and the crowds estimated at fourty thousand plus. The race revved up with The Red Bull Toyota smoking rubber down 10th. Street between the hay bales followed by the soapboxes. What a specktacle. Some of our favorites contestants were "Team Frank U"(Flamingoes), "Team Boobie-Do(Pinkies) and "Team Equus Vires Maximus"(Maximum Horse Power). It was a fun day and one of those where you really had to be there!

Soapbox Derby...Wild, Wacky & Crazy

The world famous Red Bull Soapbox Race is comming to Midtown!! And it's just four blocks from the Inn. This event is a blast and something you've just got to see in person. Held on August 29th., the wacky race will consist of some 50 separate soapbox teams cruising down (the 10th.Street dragstrip) adjacent to Piedmont Park. Teams garner points for not only being the fastest but also for the most outrageous soapbox vehicle, human powered, of course. So, make it a long weekend, come stay at the Inn and enjoy the race!! Fish, Fish Everywhere!!

Many of the Inn's guests make a trip to Atlanta just to see the Georgia Aquarium...and for good reason. It's the world's largest, has more than 120,000 animals, 500 diferent species and contains over 8 million gallons of water! Now, that qualifies as huge! Now, if that's not exciting enough for you, the Aquarium is currently hosting a special exhibit titled "Titanic Aquatic" featuring real artifacts recovered from the ocean floor at the scene of the disaster plus interactive displays. Christmas....in July???

Rumor has it that a grossly overweight older man with a white beard dressed in a red suit has been lurching in the recesses of the Inn. Not true, but there have been reported sightings of several reindeer,(Moose??) in the immediate vicinity. Oops...no, this isn't December but don't tell that to the stylists, decorators, and photographers busy at work turning the Inn into a Christmas wonderland. A magazine is working on their Christmas issue and the Shellmont Inn will be a prominent feature in that issue. Stay tuned to our blog and tweets for more info as the time gets closer.

The Joys of Innkeeping

One of the many fun chores at the Inn is assembling the floral arrangements. After 25 years of repeating this adventure, Debbie has become quite proficient at it. Certainly, the guests enjoy the aesthetic value of the visual stimulation as well as the fragrant aromas nature provides. Even "Moose" seems to enjoy the flowers...go figure that!! Monet Water Lilies

The High Museum of Art is in the second month of its exhibit, Monet Water Lilies which runs until August 23rd. The highlight of the exhibit is a 42 foot wide large scale painting of a scene of Monet's lush gardens and lily pond.Best of all, the High Museum and The Atlanta Botanical Garden have teamed up to present a "Moore and Monet" combination of both exhibits at a reduced price. You know Summer has arrived, other than the temperature guage indicating 95 degrees, when the Mandeville grows about four inches per day and produces stunning blooming flowers as in the photo above. This perky little vine wraps around the Inns' rear staircase and provides a burst of color and conversation piece for our guests enjoyment. Pass the tea, please?

Angels Revisited!!

One of our infamous FSU Angels returned to the Shellmont Inn with her sister to celebrate their Moms' 70th. birthday. They visited the Atlanta Botanical Gardens and the Moore Exhibit and then enjoyed a gourmet Thai meal at Tamarind Restaurant. After a relaxing evening out, they returned to the Inn to enjoy the air-conditioning, as the high yesterday was about 96 degrees! Congratulations to Joyce on her birthday celebration. Can you guess from the photo which of the three ladies is the Mom?? She's an avid outdoor enthusiast and a marathon runner!!!

Congratulations to Stan, Stefan and Alex Goldberg on their successful summit of Mt. Hood this past Sunday. Stan, age 81 and father of Alex and Stefan, has now completed 48 of the 50 State Highpoints. Only Granite Peak in Montana and Gannett peak in Wyoming remain on the list but an attempt on Granite comes in 5 weeks. Good luck to Stan on his personal quest. Clock's Ticking!

Well, indeed, the time clock is ticking as indicated on the previous post titled "Second Chance". Scroll down several posts to view the background info. For those guests following our blog and other interested viewers who have inquired, the mountain in question is Mt. Hood near Portland, OR. Yesterday, my gracious and understanding boss gave me the day off to go play with the boys. And play we did! About 13 miles on the AT in North Georgia from Unicoi Gap to Tray Mt. summit and back to Unicoi Gap. Great day, slightly humid but, thankfully, somewhat overcast so not so hot. Anyway, this was the last conditioning climb prior to attempting Hood again. Weather permitting, we hope to tag the summit so my friends Dad can check off one of three remaining high points left in his personal quest.
PS. The blooming flower is a rhododendrum which is very common in North Georgia. As you can see, the blooms are just opening...a hundred feet or more below the summit they had already bloomed and fallen to the ground.

The Fox Theatre sets the stage for a fantastic play reminicent of the sixties and Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. What better location than the Fox theatre! Second Chance?

Well, the clock is ticking for a second attempt for the summit of this mountain. My friend, Stefan, (back row, second from right) is accompaning his Dad, (Back row,center) in attempting one of his final peaks of the State Highpoints. Quite an achievement! We were turned back in June several years ago due to high avalanche potential. In fact, a bad accident befell several rope teams which passed us while we took a break at the berschrund. So, we'll try it again soon! Can you guess which mountain we are on?
Hint: Western US, second most climbed mountain in the world.

Atlanta Botanical Garden

If you've ever "needed" a reason to visit Atlanta, especially in the Spring, now is the time! The "Moore In America" exhibit is now on view at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, a very short stroll north of the Inn. Twenty huge cast bronze works of English sculptor Henry Moore are on a garden display scattered amongst the seasonal bloomings of nature. Atlanta is the final destination of this tour and is a one in a lifetime opportunity to see so many pieces in one location. Even better, from now thru September on Thursdays, from 6 to 10pm, they are offering, "Cocktails in the Garden", where you can view the nightly lit works of art while enjoying a fine cocktail. Late Bloomer

This particular species of Azelia blooms almost a month after the others. It compliments the Dogwood tree which is also a late bloomer. Always nice to have some color in the front gardens!

Peach Pancakes

One of our guests favorite and most requested receipe is Pannekoeken (Southern Oven Peach Pancakes)

1 Cup All-Purpose Flour
1 Cup 2% Milk
4 Eggs, Beaten
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
2 1/4 Cups of Georgia Peaches, sliced
6 TBLS Butter

Preheat oven to 450.

Mix Flour, milk, eggs, salt and nutmeg together. Fold in peaches.

Put butter in a 12-inch iron skillet and put in 450 degree oven. Watch very carefully and in approximately 5-8 minutes the butter should be melted and beginning to bubble. Do not burn. Add batter. Bake 15 minutes.

It will puff up.

Serve with sliced fruit and maple syrup.

A Colorful Addition

The rhododendrons are in bloom and are truly beautiful. Our geographical location is their extreme southern boundary, so we are happy when they show their colors. The concern, this year, is our non-stop thunderstorms which hasten the demise of the blooms. Oh well, admire them while they are here!

Located conveniently to Shellmont (about a 10 minute stroll)at Peachtree Place & West Peachtree Street, their menu is varied and priced accordingly. An extensive wine list is available by the glass or bottle. The decor is modern/contemporary with a pretty interior waterfall at the entrance. The staff is friendly and informative. If you are looking for a quick gift item, a home accessory, or a full blown home design service, then check out DRTC Studio located on Juniper Street between 7th.& 8th.street in a neat, modern contemporary mid-rise building. The store has a wide variety of home furnishing items as well as accessories. High end quality items abound as well as reasonably priced goods.

It's a neat store, just around the corner from the Inn and a nice convenience for our guests. If you're in the area, stop by for a visit. You just may spy that special piece for the house that you've been looking for!!

Spirits in Midtown?

When our guests are looking for a fine wine to savor during their stay with us or that special microbrewed, handcrafted local Atlanta beer, we send them to our favorite, longtime Atlanta institution, Mac's Beer & Wine located at the corner of West Peachtree & Peachtree Place. Mac and his staff have extensive knowledge of wines from unique regions of the world as well as domestic wines of the US. Just browsing the aisles is akin to an international trip thru well known vineyards. But the selection of beer varieties available is almost mind numbing. So, Mac has a solution...you can mix a six-pack of your favorite brews. What could be easier? Also, Mac has a extensive collection of fine liquors to satisfy the most discerning shopper. Did I mention the huge, onsite inventory stored in the cavernous basement? The Midtown location is stellar, convenient to almost everything, and a pleasant walk from the Inn.

If you have any questions, like which wine goes best with pork? (hint: pinot), just give them a call or email them as they are happy to answer your questions. After all,impeccable service is what it is all about!

Spring has Sprung!!

If it's Spring in Atlanta, it must be time for the Atlanta Dogwood Festival. This is an annual event not to be missed and a traditional rite of seasonal passage. Plus, it's a heck of a lot of fun! The primary draw, of course, are the endless line of artist venue booths displaying their wares, some of which are quite unique. Food and drink are strategically placed everywhere and you're constantly tempted by the waffing aromas. Did I mention the live bands playing all sorts of music to keep you entertained? Of course, then there is the people watching...or should that be watching out for people?

One of the most interesting vendors that caught our eye is William F. Colburn, Jr., Iron Artist, Sculpture for Home & Garden based out of Fairhope, Alabama. If you attend the festival, stop by his booth and check out his work. Pretty impressive & creative!

How about the Deep Fried Pickles and Sweet Potato Ribbon Fries stand? It's a Southern thing!! Oh well, the weather is perfect, the temperature mild and the crowd well behaved. What better way to spend a early Spring weekend!

What's in a Face?

Shellmont Inn is adorned with numerous carved wooden shells,on both the exterior and interior, the handiwork of Italian Woodcarvers. In the 1890's, the shell symbolized "tranquility". Our name was inspired by this abundance of "shells" and our location on "Piedmont", hence the name "Shellmont". You will notice in the photo a rather ominious, meanicing creature on the left side of the newell post. During this era, visitors were restricted to the downstairs public spaces and the purpose of this mythical creature was to prevent upward passage of evil spirits to the private chambers. Similar to todays burgular alarm systems but relying heavily on the visitors superstitious nature, don't you think?

More New "Old" Photos

I promised back in November, 2008 that I would add more photos of the children of the original occupants of the Inn. Well, here they are and they indeed have some history behind them other than age. Judging from the apparant age of the children, I would date these photos as late 1890's. The photographs were taken with a projector style camera on tripod on a glass negative plate. The photographer placed a dark cloth hood over his head while shooting the photo. Just a gentle reminder how photography (film vs. digital and bulky vs. compact) has changed immensely in just over @112 years!

The first photo shows a baby in carriage next to Piedmont Avenue in front of the Inn. Notice the horse and carriage in the background. The second photo shows a baby strolling a toy baby carriage on the front porch and the third photo shows the three children decked out in their Sunday finest on the front walkway. How about the neat sailor outfit and those fancy, lacy dresses. Weren't the 1890's a real hoot??

A Fantastic Photographer

Capturing images in alternating light filled environments is just one of the specialties of renowned Atlanta photographer Tim Olive. Midtowns' Best Microbrewery

If you're looking for genuinely good food and hanker for a home brewed beer with seasonal twists, go no further than two blocks west of the Inn to Gordon Biersch Brewery & Restaurant. One of the favorites with our guests for flavor, service and convenience, GB has a fantastic Blackened Mahi-Mahi sandwich to die for! Their menu is very varied-steaks, seafood, pasta, salads, pizza, etc.

They have late hours of operation, also, which is convenient for our late arriving guests who have flown into Hartsfield but haven't had time to catch a meal.

But best of all, Gordon Biersch provides Shellmont Inn guests with a little suprise just for our special guests. Be sure to check with the Innkeeper to secure your treat!

Phoenix Flies

The 6th. Annual Phoenix Flies is currently underway in Atlanta and we were graced by a short visit. Sponsored by the Atlanta Preservation Center, the Phoenix Flies is "A Citywide Celebration of Living Landmarks" and will have over 100 events, including tours, lectures, and open houses at dozens of historic sites. The event runs from March 7th.-22nd. Best of all, it's all FREE!!

Camelias in Bloom

The Camellias at the Inn are in full bloom. Check out the photo above of the twenty foot plus tall specimen in our rear gardens. This variety is grafted with three colors... pink, red and white. What a kaleidoscope of color. Hopefully, the current cold snap won't do too much damage!

"Squirt" Update

Some of our regular guests have inquired about the stray cat which showed up at the Inn several months ago which we named Squirt due to her thin and underweight appearance. Our previous blog entitled "Adopted" gave the basics of her adoption by a nice family here in Atlanta. Well, she is definately female and is happy in her new home and is gaining weight. She has been to the vet and is in great shape. She plays with bunches of toys, loves treats and pretty much has the run of the house. Her new name is "Poppy". She is making a great pet for this family!!

Innkeepers' Day Off

Well, it finally snowed in North Georgia, although only about a half inch, but just enough to make things pretty. So, combined with 35+mph winds and 27 degree temps, conditions were perfect for a day hike. An hour and a half north of Atlanta puts you on the Appalachian Trail and into stellar views of North Carolina. Did I mention the bear tracks we encountered on the trail in the newly fallen snow?? Suddenly you find yourself looking behind you at the slightest noise or movement. We encountered several AT thru-hikers getting an early start heading towards Maine. Wow!!

Following a long day on the AT, my friend, Lee, and I decided to hike up to Mt. Yonah and check out the climbing routes as he had passed the mountain many times and had always been curious. He was impressed and will return I'm sure.

So, Innkeepers do get out and have fun in the woods. It's nice to have an understanding Boss!

The First Emperor: China's Terracotta Army is one of the greatest archeological discoveries of the last century with over 100 works and is the largest terracotta warrior figures to come to the US. Terracotta Warriors info.

The High Museum is also hosting The Louvre Exhibit featuring 91 works of art spanning over 4,000 years. Visit this exhibit at The Louvre.

Where do Innkeepers go on their vacations? Our Vacation Home

Many of our guests often inquire if we, as Innkeepers, take vacations? Where do you go for fun and to relax? Well, the answer is simple. We own a Slice of Paradise on Fripp Island, SC. Fripp is a very special place (a private island) offering a rare bit of solitude far away from the hustle and bustle of Atlanta, GA. Located 18 miles east of Beaufort, SC, Fripp is the last in a series of barrier islands and is located adjacent to Hunting Island State Park. Fripp is a Wildlife Sanctuary as well as a Bird Sanctuary, thus all species, including the abundant deer population, are federally protected. But the absolute best feature is the drop dead georgeous BEACH. Over 3 miles of beautiful, white sand beach. And...our house is located just steps away from this amazing wonder.

So, we walk on the beach and collect seashells, ride bikes on the miles of paved paths, enjoy stellar sunrises and sunsets, watch the wildlife and share good seafood with friends and neighbors. Aaaaaaaah...life is great!

Georgia Pear Bread

One of our most requested receipes is Georgia Pear Bread. We serve this with several of our signature egg dishes. Hope you enjoy!

1 Stick of Butter, softened
3/4 Cup Turminado Sugar (Sugar in the Raw)
2 Eggs
2 Cups of Flour (All Purpose) Sifted
1/4 tsp. Baking Powder
1 tsp. Baking Soda
1/3 tsp. fresh ground nutmeg
1/4 Cup Vanilla Yogurt
2 Pears, Peeled and chopped

Spray one loaf pan with PAM. Cream Butter, sugar and eggs. In a separate bowl mix flour, baking powder, baking soda and nutmeg. Add Flour mixture. Add Vanilla Yogurt. Fold in pears. Pour batter into loaf pan. Bake at 350 for 1 hour..

Yes...the "Angels" have arrived at Shellmont. Unlike some Inns who claim to have haunted spirits inhabiting the rafters, we are temporarily graced with the Angels of Pi Beta Phi of Florida State University. And what a delightful group of gals they are indeed! They have taken a moment to pose for a group photo before heading out for a day of fun in Atlanta.

With the sightseeing and shopping accomplished, they stopped long enough for another group photo prior to heading out to Mitra Restaurant for a fantastic evening meal. Oooh...life is good!

This is what I saw while bicycling in nearby Piedmont Park yesterday evening. It's amazing how few people venture outdoors when the weather turns cold. But on the bright side, fewer people means a more pleasant outdoor experience here in busy Atlanta. Still waiting for the snowstorm to arrive!

As promised, "Moose" the Innkitty has made a "guest" appearance for the Holidays. Could he possibly be looking out the window to spy Santa, or is he looking in? Is this photo an optical illusion or is Moose the resident ghost innkitty? Go figure!

Anyway, he does enjoy the Christmas Season and especially lounging around the decorated tree and sniffing for his special gift. Catnip, anyone???

Southern Cornbread Dressing

Recently, Debbie was honored by Select Registry for her participation in the Inn-Credible Breakfast Cook-Off for 2008. Congratulations,Debbie,on your fantastic entry and for a job well done!

With the Holiday Season rapidly approaching, we thought you might like a recipe for that special meal. Shellmont Inns' Southern Cornbread Dressing.

4 cups crumbled cornbread
3 or 4 pieces bread or biscuit, crumbled
2 13 3/4-ounce cans Swanson chicken broth
1 large onion, chopped
3 ribs celery, chopped
3 eggs
1 cup butter, melted

In a large bowl combine the cornbread, bread, and chicken broth, and allow to soak. Add the onions, celery, and eggs, mix thoroughly. Add the melted butter. Place the mixture in a 9 1/2 x 13 1/2 baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees oven for 1 hour and twenty minutes.
Serves 6 to 8 persons.

Sometimes you just have to take a break from the Inn. Here you find me just below the summit shortly after sunrise. Notice the shadow of the mountain! Downtown Atlanta is just to the left about 20 miles West and Buckhead to the right. Click to enlarge the photo and you will see, if you look closely, Kennesaw Mountain above and slightly left of the shadow. It is about 20 miles Northwest of Atlanta in the opposite direction.

NEWS FLASH !!! No, you're not seeing a repeat of the post a few days ago. GOOD NEWS..."Squirt" has been adopted! The kitty who showed up at the Inn was adopted today. The proud parents and daughter live here in Atlanta. They have a large house and will give this kitten the love and care she (?) deserves. A Happy ending indeed.

Work at the Inn

Work happens...especially at an Inn. Seems as though there is always something to do, especially as it relates to a 117 year old structure. Up high on the roof, UV rays discolor paint more quickly than on other partially shaded areas of the Inn. Thus, my presence is required periodically to remedy the situation. Ah, maybe I should consider an apprentice in training!!

I Need A Home!!!

Hi! My name is "squirt" and I mysteriously showed up at the Inn about a month ago. I was really hungry and exhausted at the time but the Innkeepers have been really good to me. Today, in addition to my regular kitty food, I was given some canned tuna which I promptly whoofed down. I'm just a little shy but looking for a special owner who can give me an indoor home. I would make a great inside kitty for someone out there who needs my attention. Just look at me...all black with just a hint of white under my chin and did I mention my yellow eyes?

The Innkeepers would like to adopt me but they already have a cat named "Moose" who stays inside the Inn. They are afraid that should I remain outside, I might get runover by a car or attacked by a dog. So...would someone out there like to adopt me? If so, please contact the innkeepers for more info. I promise, I'll make a great indoor kitty.

A Past Era Revealed

In 117 years, the Shellmont Inn has had only two owners. We thought you might like an "innside" view into the everyday life of the original occupants. When originally constructed in 1891, the Inn was situated in the country. The City of Atlanta municipal limit was our side street to the north. The owners fox hunted in the woods behind the property.

The first photo perspective is looking south down Piedmont Avenue toward downtown. The Shellmont Inn is the fourth house from the left. Photo taken circa mid-1890's.

The second photo is of one of the children with her doll on the front porch while the last photo shows the children playing in the front yard with their St. Benard dog. More historical photos will be forthcoming in a future blog.

Our Favorite local restaurant

Located just one block West of Shellmont Inn is MITRA, a Latin influenced restaurant with a unique Spanish flair. Not only is Mitra our personal favorite local restaurant, but it is a big hit with our guests. Many Inn guests dine there multiple times during their stay with us. The food is delicious, presentation supurb, the staff is attentive and friendly, the decor is bright, cheerful, even whimsical, and the price is extremely reasonable. And of course, the location is stellar! What more could you ask of a restaurant?

The menu is varied, the wine list is long and my personal menu favorite is "Vieras Frescas Acarameladas Con Jalapeno Y Lima", Sea Scallops. Debbies' favorite is "Salmon Pintado Con Granada", Pomegranate glazed Cypress island salmon. Regardless of your menu selection, you won't be disappointed. Mitra also has a Prix Fixe Menu option which is quite popular with its patrons. Don't forget the appetizer...the calamari is by far the best I have ever tasted. Seriously!!!

When you are in Midtown and searching for a unique dining experience, visit Mitra. I'll be willing to bet you will return again and again...it's just that good!

The Green Market

Fall is here in Atlanta, the leaves are beginning to change and the evenings are cool and crisp. As if on que, every Saturday morning through December, Piedmont Park plays host to the Green Market, a great place to buy organic vegetables, fresh flowers, homemade bread, honey, soap and special doggie biscuits. Just browsing by each vendor booth reveals neat treats and goodies which you'll be tempted to purchase and bring back home.

Speaking of treats, Halloween is just around the corner and apparantly face painting by local "witches" is in vogue. The child in the photo seems unphased about the applicators' appearance. Must be the calming influence of the hat!?! Oh well, best to just continue on and wander around sampling the cooked and prepared specialties available throughout the market.

Piedmont Park is only four blocks north of the Inn and is Atlanta's largest and most popular park. Recent and ongoing rennovations have made it an exceptional asset to the City and it is heavily used for recreation by Midtown residents in particular. Our visiting guests love it!

A Joyous Occasion

Congratulations to Jason and Cheryl on their recent wedding. What a joyous and special occasion for them! Following the ceremony, the happy couple honeymooned at the Inn. They enjoyed the privacy and serenity of the Carriage House Cottage, a lush setting situated within the manicured gardens and multiple fishponds. Atlanta Trolley Tours

What better way to see the sights in Atlanta than on a old-fashioned trolley with a professional driver and narrated tour. Just park the car, relax and enjoy! Our pick is Atlanta Trolley Tour Line which operates multiple trolleys offering sightseeing tours to unique points of interest in Downtown and Midtown Atlanta. Downtown stops include Underground, Turner Field, MLK,Jr. Center, Centennial Park. MIDTOWN stops include Atlanta Botanical Gardens, Woodruff Arts Center, Center for Pupperty Arts, Margaret Mitchell House, and the Varsity. The Trolley stops in front of the Inn to allow riders to take photographs while listening to a short narrative. This is a fun way to see Atlanta as evidenced by all the smiles on the riders!

"Moose" the Innkitty

Hi! My name is "Moose" and I'm the resident Innkitty. I got my name because I had such large paws when I was a kitten. I guess it's better to be a cat named Moose than a moose named Cat! My adopted Innkeeper parents rescued me from a cage three years ago and I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. Although I'm not allowed inside guestrooms, I have free roam of all the public spaces in the Inn...wow!! This place is a palace.

My typical day starts late as I prefer to sleep in later than most guests and the Innkeepers. Following a leisurely breakfast, I routinely lounge around following sunspots throughout the Inn, napping occassionally. However, when the doorbell rings and guests and luggage appear, I like to introduce myself and then escort the new arrivals to their rooms. It seems almost everyone at the Inn can't resist petting me and playing catgames with me. Sometimes they will bring me treats and goodies and I will reward them with headbutts and allow bellyrubs.

Commercial photographers always pester me and make me pose for photos. What's up with them? Haven't they ever seen a cat before? Oh well, I'll gladly pose for treats 'cause I'm food motivated. I really like to gaze out the Inn's front beveled plate glass windows as I can see the guests walking up the walkway to check-in. I can also see the guests relaxing on the rear veranda by looking thru the round, beveled window in the stairwell.

Oh well, life is good and I feel a nap coming soon...so, for now, I'll sign off but expect to hear from me again during the Holiday Season...

Debbie's Adventures...

I am Debbie, Ed's other better half and Co-owner of the Shellmont Inn. As a type A+ personality, I have many pursuits. On the top of the list is adventure travel, which may include dogsledding, biking or kayaking. In one weak moment, I even skydived out of a perfectly lovely plane at 14,000+ feet!!. A few of my other passions are antiquing, culinary pursuits, gardening, reading and beach activities at our vacation home.
The other love of my life is Moose, who you will be hearing from shortly.

Climbing with Ed

Hello!! I am Ed and the co-owner and innkeeper at Shellmont Inn. If you have already viewed the sidebar list of our favorite Things to Read and View and our Favorite Links, then you have most likely concluded that my passion is Alpine Climbing, Mountaineering and Rock Climbing. In fact, if I'm not at the Inn, chances are good that I'm out seeking higher ground.

I became interested in mountaineering just over five years ago while surfing the web looking for an exciting outdoor sport which would be physically challenging. Climbing caught my attention, specifically Mt. Rainier outside Seattle in Washington state. I trained very hard (or at least I thought I had) for five months prior to my summit attempt. However, at 12,500 feet, I hit the wall and could go no further. Of course, the 60+ mile per hour wind may have had something to do with that issue! Anyway, I returned 7 months later and gained the summit. What a wonderful feeling of accomplishment.

Since then, I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to climb Mt. Whitney (California), Mt. Hood (Oregon) and Ixta & Orizaba (Mexico) as well as rock climb here in the Southeast states. I routinely try to stay in shape by riding a mountain bike from the Inn in Midtown, Atlanta to Stone Mountain east of Atlanta, climb the mountain and return back to the Inn...a fourty mile round trip. Of course, working around the Inn presents numerous opportunities for exercise on a daily basis.

Our next post will most likely focus on Debbie, our resident Innkeeper and Co- Owner of Shellmont Inn, who also happens to be my wife who patiently supports my mountain wanderlust!!!

During these years, we have had the privledge to host thousands of guests from all over the world for both business and pleasure.
